Marybeth Jones saw a need in her community and she figured knitting could help it. Jones is a parishioner at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, and she recently started a knitting group to knit scarves for the homeless.
“It’s something people don’t often think about. Everyone thinks about soup kitchens or donating canned goods but cold weather is on its way and staying warm is essential,” Jones said.
Msgr. James Dempsey stopped by the first meeting to offer a few tips for the novice knitters. Msgr. Dempsey told the group he has been knitting since he was 6 years old. He was thrilled that a group like this had been organized.
“I was just thinking that I can knit a scarf and I bet a lot of other people at my parish can do it too. Even if you can’t knit that well or at all. We were so lucky to have Msgr. Dempsey come out and donate a little of his time to get us started,” Jones said.
The group will meet again Oct. 9 at 5:30 in the Cathedral Center. For more information, please call Jones at (409) 893-1566.
