WASHINGTON (CNS) — The U.S. Supreme Court’s June 28 decision upholding the health reform law makes it even more urgent for Congress to act to fix the law’s “fundamental flaws” on abortion funding, conscience protection and immigrants’ access to health care, the U.S. bishops said.
The court found that although the individual mandate in the 2010 health reform law does not pass constitutional muster under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution, it can be upheld as an acceptable exercise of Congress’ taxing powers. (more…)

WASHINGTON (CNS) — In what one observer called “the judicial equivalent of white smoke,” immigration advocates were largely happy with the June 25 Supreme Court ruling that struck down three key provisions of Arizona’s own immigration law.
However, they voiced distress over the one part of the law the high court kept intact: the “show me your papers” provision. (more…)
Sacred Heart, Raywood, celebrated its 60th anniversary June 17. The parish turned out to celebrate Mass and enjoy each others company at a reception following. Church elders were given roses and certificates to thank them for all they had done for the parish over the years. (more…)
Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas honored fathers as it raised monies to benefit its programs at its 21st annual Breakfast with the Bishop on Father’s Day weekend, June 16. The program included examples of how the Catholic Charities ministries help people in Southeast Texas.
