Southeast TexasCatholics are taking 24 hours for prayer and fasting at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica,Beaumont, March 30, in an effort to preserve religious freedom. Events began atmidnightand are continuing for 24 hours. The celebration of Mass with BishopCurtis Guillory, SVD, will begin at12:10 p.m.
Bishop Guillory is joining bishops across theUnited Statesin asking Catholics to observe the day of prayer and fasting for national leaders and for the complete protection of religious freedom.
“With thisHHSruling, the government is defining what Catholics and people of other faiths should believe,” Bishop Guillory said.
“Our country was founded on religious freedom, and people come to our country so they might enjoy that freedom. But now religious freedom is being attacked, and we know from scripture and our faith informs us that prayer and fasting changes things. We are asking people of other faiths who feel religious freedom is being threatened to join with us in prayer and fasting.”
