24 hours to save religious freedom

Southeast TexasCatholics are taking 24 hours for prayer and fasting at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica,Beaumont, March 30, in an effort to preserve religious freedom. Events began atmidnightand are continuing for 24 hours. The celebration of Mass with BishopCurtis Guillory, SVD, will begin at12:10 p.m.

Bishop Guillory is joining bishops across theUnited Statesin asking Catholics to observe the day of prayer and fasting for national leaders and for the complete protection of religious freedom. (more…)

Vatican approves blessing rite for unborn children

WASHINGTON (CNS) — Just in time for Mother’s Day, U.S. Catholics parishes will be able to celebrate the new Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb.

The Vatican has given its approval to publication in English and Spanish of the new rite, which was approved by the U.S. bishops in November 2008, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced March 26. (more…)

Bulldogs help out Southeast Texas

Folks at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School, Beaumont, take their volunteering seriously. Every student at Kelly as well as the teachers and a few parents descended on Southeast Texas March 27 during Spring Into Action, a full day of volunteering at more than 40 organizations. Students helped clean St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, they fed, bathed and played with dogs at the Humane Society of Southeast Texas and planted a garden at St. Anthony Catholic School, Beaumont, among many, many others. Mission offers crash course in sainthood

Those who attended the St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, Lenten Mission March 26 got a crash course in sainthood from Jesuit Father T.J. Martinez as he presented “Jesus in Your Busy Everyday Life.”

Father Martinez emphasized how every saint had a personal relationship with the Lord.

“It is a personal relationship to Christ that comes first. The holy acts come later. Someone’s piety doesn’t make them saintly. Your piety is saintly if it comes from a profoundly deep relationship with Jesus Christ,” Father Martinez said. (more…)

At Mass, pope recognizes Cubans’ struggles, calls freedom a necessity

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba (CNS) — Celebrating an outdoor Mass on his first day in Cuba, Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged the struggles of the country’s Catholics after half a century of communism and described human freedom as a necessity for both salvation and social justice.

The pope spoke March 26 in Antonio Maceo Revolution Square, in Cuba’s second-largest city. He had arrived in the country a few hours earlier, after spending three days in Mexico.

The Vatican had said the square would hold 200,000 people and it was full; several thousand also filled the streets leading to the square. Cuban President Raul Castro, who welcomed the pope at the airport, sat in the front row for Mass. (more…)

Bishops call for immigration reform

U.S. bishops have once again raised the issue of immigration reform and have encouraged leaders in the U.S. to work toward reform.

Congressional leaders should “build consensus” toward reform of the nation’s immigration laws, said Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration, in a March 22 letter. Day of Prayer

Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, is reminding Southeast Texas Catholics to observe a day of prayer and fasting for national leaders and complete protection of religious liberty. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked Catholics to observe a Day of Prayer and Fasting Friday, March 30. In calling for the observance, U . S . Bishops pointed out that religious liberty is not only protected in the laws and customs of the United States, but also rooted in the teachings of Catholic Tradition and that prayer is the ultimate source of strength. Bishop Guillory also has asked pastors to remind their parishioners about the March 30th day of prayer and fasting. The USCCB has been very concerned about a recent decision from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding health care that would cause Catholic institutions to violate Catholic teaching.

Papal flag burned in Sour Lake

Parishioners at Our Lady of Victory are praying for a young man accused of burning their papal flag. The 19 year old Sour Lake resident was charged March 20 with arson in connection with the incident. (more…)
