Students present Bishop Guillory with thousands of service hours

February 1, 2012 by easttexascatholic

Students from the six Catholic schools throughout Southeast Texas presented Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, with more than 20,000 hours of service work Feb. 1 at the annual Rainbow Mass at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, as part of Catholic Schools Week.

“As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, the theme we have chosen is “Faith. Academics. Service.” We can look at those three as a three legged stool. If one leg is bad we would fall. So the idea of “Faith. Academics. Service.” is that if we have those three and as we get our education, we’re able to integrate those three in our hearts, and we’ll be better prepared to live life and make a better contribution,” Bishop Guillory said during his homily.

The school joined Catholic schools across the nation Jan. 29-Feb. 4 to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.

“Catholic Schools Week celebrates what makes Catholic education exceptional, our high academic standards, a nurturing, Christian atmosphere, and a safe and disciplined environment,” Marcia Stevens, superintendent of schools, said.

Stevens is encouraging the community to visit the six schools and discover how affordable an exceptional education can be.

This year’s theme is “Faith. Academics. Service.” and “expresses the priorities of our schools and exemplifies the quality of Catholic education,” Stevens added.

Service is one aspect of a Catholic education that continues to set it apart from a public education. Each year students complete hundreds of hours of service work. This year students will present Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, with gifts that represent their commitment to service at the annual Rainbow Mass Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica. Hundreds of students will fill the basilica in honor of the week.

Each school has several activities lined up throughout the week including an exciting volleyball game at St. Anne Catholic School where the faculty will face off against eighth-grade students at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

Other activities include a prayer service at 12:55 Feb. 2 in the gym of Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School to show appreciation to all parents, volunteers, clergy, board members and friends of the school.

St. Mary Catholic School will host a grandparents day brunch at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 3. A program will be presented on stage by students and class projects will be on display.

St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School will host a vocations day Jan. 30.

Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School will host a career day Jan. 30.

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School will host a grandparents and volunteers appreciation day Feb. 3.
