Knights celebrate St. Peter Claver feast day

Mass at Our Mother of Mercy, Beaumont, on Sept. 11 was filled with white hats and gold sashes as the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of St. Peter Claver gathered to celebrate their patron saint’s feast day.

Southeast Texans remember 9/11

Though it was a time of fear and uncertainty 10 years ago, during the noon Mass at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, in memory of Sept. 11, love was the overwhelming emotion.

“God has created us to be at peace with each other. He has created us to love one another because it is love that keeps it all together,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said during his homily. (more…)

WASHINGTON (CNS) — As the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, neared, the president of the U.S. bishops pledged “today and always to reject hatred and resist terrorism” in a statement reflecting on 9/11.

“A decade later we remain resolved to reject extreme ideologies that perversely misuse religion to justify indefensible attacks on innocent civilians, to embrace persons of all religions, including our Muslim neighbors, and to welcome refugees seeking safety,” said Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York in his message, “A Time for Remembrance, Resolve and Renewal: Statement on the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11.” (more…)

WASHINGTON (CNS) — Pope Benedict XVI offered his blessings to U.S. Catholics as they prepared to observe the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

In a message to Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. bishops, the pope said, “I join you in commending the thousands of victims to the infinite mercy of Almighty God and in asking our heavenly Father to continue to console those who mourn the loss of loved ones.” (more…)

Four Southeast Texas first responders will carry a 12 foot replica of the Ground Zero Cross into St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, corner of Jefferson and Wall, Beaumont, at the noon Sept. 11 Mass in memory of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks 10 years ago. (more…)

First all school reunion for St. Pius X

Former students of St. Pius X Catholic School, Beaumont got a chance to walk down memory lane Sept. 4 during the first St. Pius X All School Reunion.

Alumni gathered in the parish hall to pray and sing a few songs that were school favorites before taking a tour of the old school buildings and reminiscing about their younger days. (more…)

WASHINGTON (CNS) — When the third edition of the English-language version of the Roman Missal is implemented at Advent, it will mark the continuing evolution of the eucharistic liturgy that began in the earliest days of the church.

The most recent changes — which more closely reflect “Liturgiam Authenticam” (“The Authentic Liturgy”), the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments’ 2001 document on liturgical translations — are unlikely to be the last, liturgists agree.

From Aramaic to Greek to Latin to vernacular language after the Second Vatican Council, the Mass has evolved over 2,000 years in an effort to help worshippers appreciate the mystery that is God. (more…)
