Health fair a hit at Queen of Vietnam

Port Arthur residents packed the parish hall at Queen of Vietnam, Port Arthur, for the second annual Health and Community Fair.

Local healthcare providers set up booths for free blood pressure tests, hearing tests and blood glucose tests among others. Information was handed out on diabetes, hypertension and many other items of interest. (more…)

Hundreds of thousands of youth and young adults have gathered this week in Madrid, Spain, to take part in World Youth Day, some of those young adults being from the Diocese of Beaumont.

One group of young adults traveled with Jesús Abrego, director of the Hispanic Ministry. WYD kicked off Aug. 16, but the group began their pilgrimage Aug. 8 in order to make the most out of the visit. (more…)

MADRID (CNS) — Listening to and praying with energetic young Catholics is a joy, Pope Benedict XVI told the king of Spain.

“I have come here to meet thousands of young people from all over the world, Catholics committed to Christ, searching for the truth that will give real meaning to their existence,” the pope told King Juan Carlos Aug. 18 at Madrid’s Barajas airport.

The king, walking with a crutch, and Queen Sofia welcomed the pope, as did 50 Spanish boys and young men dressed as Swiss Guards to make the pope feel at home. (more…)

St. Anthony kicks off first day of school

Students and parents filed into classrooms at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica Catholic School, Beaumont, Aug. 15 for the first day of school. Teachers spoke to the students about their excitement for the new school year and assured the parents that their children would get a quality Catholic education.

Assumption celebrates 60 years

Spirits were high as parishioners and visitors from throughout the diocese gathered at Our Lady of the Assumption, Beaumont, to celebrate the parish’s 60th anniversary Aug. 14.

Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, spoke about looking to the past and being thankful for those who have come before during his homily.

“I think about those early parishioners here at Assumption and their strength and their faith. We should be thankful to them for all that they did to ensure that this parish was built and sustained,” Bishop Guillory said. (more…)

Lamar student center chapel dedicated

The Lamar University Catholic Student Center was filled to the brim as visitors from all over Southeast Texas and beyond gathered to celebrate the dedication of the St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel.

Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, celebrated Mass and spoke about all the hard work that had gone into the new chapel and the remodeling of the student center. (more…)

Diocese says goodbye to Deacon DeLee

A Mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 10 at St. James, Port Arthur, for Deacon James DeLee Sr. After decades of service in Southeast Texas, Deacon DeLee passed away on his 78th birthday Aug. 7 at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont.

“Jim in just his lifetime has done so much, but he would say he didn’t do it alone. God gave him these gifts, and he used them to the best of his ability,” Father J.C. Coon, pastor of St. James, said during his homily.

He was ordained to the permanent diaconate Feb. 25, 2006, at St. Anthony Cathedral, Beaumont, by Bishop Guillory. Effective immediately following his ordination, Deacon DeLee was assigned to St. James, Port Arthur, where he served until his death. (more…)

Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Aug. 9 with a vigil at 7 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 211 Hardy Avenue, Nederland. Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Aug. 10 at St. James Catholic Church, 3617 Gulfway Drive, Port Arthur.

He was ordained to the permanent diaconate Feb. 25, 2006, at St. Anthony Cathedral, Beaumont, by Bishop Guillory. Effective immediately following his ordination, Deacon DeLee was assigned to St. James, Port Arthur, where he served until his death. (more…)
