Evangelization is a word Catholics have been hearing more and more over the last few years. It was certainly heard a lot at an event hosted by the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston July 15-19 called Unity Explosion.

When Charley Messina began working for the Diocese of Beaumont in 1997 the position of director of the office of construction didn’t even exist. Now, after overseeing more than $35 million worth of projects, not including hurricane repairs, Messina is retiring.

“Before I was here the pastors of all the parishes oversaw their own projects. Bishop (Joseph) Galante saw that the diocese needed someone who was familiar with aspects of construction and renovation to handle projects,” Messina said. (more…)

Catholic Relief Services is still at work managing various relief efforts in Japan following the tsunami earlier this year.

Millions of households were affected, with more than 370,000 houses and other buildings destroyed. The government of Japan responded effectively to immediate needs, but some gaps still exist which Caritas Japan is filling. (more…)

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Vatican and other Christian representatives have issued a series of recommendations for evangelization in multifaith societies, rejecting aggressive or coercive methods but defending the right to profess, propagate or change one’s religion.

The principles were outlined June 28 in a document titled, “Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious World: Recommendations for Conduct,” issued jointly by the Pontifical Council for the Interreligious Dialogue, the World Council of Churches and the World Evangelical Alliance. (more…)

In recognition of National Men’s Health Month, the Gift of Life, through its continued partnership with Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and the Baptist Cancer Center provided free prostate cancer blood test screenings to nearly 250 medically underserved eligible Southeast Texas men in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange. The feast of Corpus Christi was celebrated at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, June 26 with a procession around the grounds of the church.

The feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the body of Christ consecrated in the Mass. The Eucharist is placed inside a monstrance before the procession begins. (more…)

Representatives from Catholic media organizations throughout the United States and Canada, and some as far away as South Africa, came together for the 2011 Catholic Media Convention June 21-25. The highlight of the convention is always the Catholic Press Awards which was held Friday night. The Diocese of Beaumont placed 3rd in the diocesan directory category for the 2010-2012 Official Directory of the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont. Several other Texas dioceses won as well in other categories.

Baltimore – Catholic Relief Services announced June 24 that its Board of Directors has named Dr. Carolyn Y. Woo, a former member of the CRS board, to serve as the agency’s president and CEO. Woo will succeed Ken Hackett, who is retiring after leading CRS for the past 18 years.

Woo, 57, has served as the dean of the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame since 1997. She served on the CRS Board of Directors from 2004 until 2010. (more…)
