Catholics from throughout the diocese joined with Catholics throughout the world as the church celebrated not only Divine Mercy Sunday but the beatification of Blessed John Paul II May 1.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica Beaumont. Bishop Guillory spoke about Blessed John Paul II.
“He was a humble man. He never thought he was worthy of anything. I remember his first words as pope were ‘Do not be afraid. Open your doors to Christ.’ He was a brave man as well. He always taught us not to fear,” Bishop Guillory said.
He also spoke of forgiveness and how important confession is in relation to Divine Mercy Sunday.
When we go to the doctor for an operation the wound may heal but we still remember. When we go to confession we are healed but we still remember. Not with hurt or anger but with peace and mercy,” Bishop Guillory said.
