Catechumens and candidates from across the diocese gathered for the Rite of Election March 13 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont. The Liturgy of the Word was celebrated in two separate ceremonies by Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD.
“The church has placed this celebration beginning of Lent. It’s significant because your coming into the Church is a very important event in your life during a very important event in the Church,” Bishop Guillory said.
The Rite of Election is the first public step in the RCIA process. It marks the beginning of the more intense preparation for the sacraments of initiation, baptism, confirmation and Eucharist.
“I urge you to be full participants of the church. Be a witness. Come and listen to the scriptures. Get involved in your parish and share your gifts. We will walk with you and we will pray with you,” Bishop Guillory said.
After each Liturgy of the Word attendees gathered in the Basilica Center for a reception where Bishop Guillory greeted them personally.
