Married couples and their family and friends gathered at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, for the 25th-50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration Oct. 10. The Mass honored those couples celebrating a 25th anniversary this year and 50 years or more.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, celebrated Mass and spoke about love during his homily.“I would bet that all of you would say the love you feel for your spouse is much different now than it was when you first got married. If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t be sitting here probably. Love grows and changes as you grow as a couple,” Bishop Guillory said.
Before Mass ended, Bishop Guillory handed out certificates giving the couples a memento to remember the occasion.
The couple that had been together the longest, Bernard and Bertha Schnoebelen, were celebrating 69 years together. When asked what the secret to a healthy marriage was Bertha Schnoebelen had two answers.
“It’s hard work but you have to keep working at it, and you also have to put God first in your marriage,” Schnoebelen said.
Her husband Bernard interjected “It helps if you have a good partner.”
The annual event was sponsored by the office of Family Life Ministry.
