Priests often encourage their parishioners to give generously to charities and religious organizations. In September parishioners will have a chance to give back to their priests.
Sept. 18-19 a second collection will be taken up in parishes and missions throughout the diocese to benefit the Infirm Priests’ Fund. The fund covers costs that retired or disabled priests might incur such as medical expenses and assisted living.
“It’s going to become more and more important as the years go on. This fund was invaluable to me personally, and it continues to be invaluable to priests today. It’s our way of looking after those who have looked after us,” Msgr. James Vanderholt, pastor of St. Mark the Evangelist, Silsbee.
Vicar general of the diocese Msgr. Michael Jamail said the annual collection is very important.
He explained that it acts as a resource for the bishop when he provides medical assistance for a priest which exceeds insurance coverage or when disability requires steady funding.
“The priest, of course, uses his own savings but they are sometimes insufficient, especially with chronic illness. The generosity of the faithful for this special collection is inspiring,” Msgr. Jamail said.
