Third agers celebrate fiesta style

April 20, 2010 by easttexascatholic

Forget about being old enough to vote or get married. Unless you’re old enough to receive a senior citizens discount, you’re too young for this event. It was seniors only at the 18th annual Third Age Day celebration was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Port Arthur, April 20.

More than 240 people made plans to attend the Mexican themed event sponsored by Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas. The event brought together senior citizens from throughout the Diocese of Beaumont and began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, followed by lunch provided by Damas Guadalupañas. Attendees later enjoyed singing by Shellie Murz and dancing from the Mexican Heritage Society.

The Third Age Day celebration is an opportunity for Catholic Charities’ Parish Social Ministry program to help seniors enjoy one another’s company, engage in some spiritual reflection and consider how their gifts of time and energy can help parishes spread the Gospel message of social concern.
