PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CNS) — Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., has accepted an invitation from Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence to engage in a discussion about the issue of health care reform.
The bishop issued the invitation following the legislator’s sharp criticism about the U.S. Catholic bishops’ role in the debate. According to an Associated Press story, no date has been set yet for the meeting. (more…)

LUBBOCK, Texas (CNS) — El 9 de julio de 2007, mientras descargaba comestibles en su garaje, Don McCullough notó a un joven que se apresuraba a lo largo de la acera y sudando en el día caliente. McCullough lo llamó y ofreció al desconocido una botella de agua que llevaba en su bolsa de comestibles.
Alonzo Lewis tomó el agua, se fue y entonces regresó. Él le robó y mató a McCullough, apuñalando más de 30 veces al coronel jubilado de la Fuerza Aérea de 73 años de edad. (more…)

WASHINGTON (CNS) — “Families are struggling. Faith is calling” is the theme for this year’s national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, which will be taken up in most U.S. Catholic churches the weekend of Nov. 21-22.
“This year, our call as Catholics to bring glad tidings to the poor … to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free is more important than ever before,” said Bishop Roger P. Morin of Biloxi, Miss., who is chairman of the U.S. bishops’ CCHD subcommittee. (more…)

ROME (CNS) — Dissident theologian Father Hans Kung criticized Pope Benedict XVI for his recent opening to discontented Anglicans, charging the pope was “fishing” for the most conservative Christians to the detriment of the larger church.
Father Kung said the invitation to traditionalist Anglicans to join the Roman Catholic Church went against years of ecumenical work on the part of both churches, calling it instead “a nonecumenical piracy of priests.” (more…)

“While discrimination continues to happen in our nation and in the Southeast Texas region, we owe it to our faith and religious practice to make sure we do what is pleasing in the sight of God,” Father Jerome Robinson, guest speaker for the St. Martin de Porres, National Black Catholic History Month celebration, said.
Father Robinson will be the guest speaker at the celebration Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres, Cheek. He plans on discussing the life of St. Martin de Porres and how people can continue to learn from him today.
“St. Martin de Porres is regarded as the patron saint of social justice. For as long as there has been knowledge of his life, we know that he himself was a victim of discrimination,” Father Robinson said.
“Instead of becoming bitter and resentful, he turned his experience into positive opportunities to bring comfort to those who were ailing, to provide food to those who were hungry and to essentially bring in ministries in the form of outreach,” he said.

It was a joyous celebration Oct. 24 as parishioners gathered to celebrate the 80th anniversary of St. James Parish, Port Arthur.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D., celebrated Mass and wished the parish many more years of service. Several parishioners wore red shirts in honor of the anniversary, and Bishop Guillory said he hopes it’s a sign they will continue to set the church on fire with the love of God.
After Mass, parishioners reminisced about the past and celebrated the anniversary in Kirwin Hall. (more…)
